Submitted on behalf of Brian McAree, vice president for student affairs and campus life.

It is that time of year again when picnics, receptions, and banquets are held to celebrate the completion of the academic year, students' accomplishments, and Commencement. Many times, such events take place off campus, at private homes and other locations. If alcohol will be available for students in attendance, it is important to remember the responsibilities that are associated with such an event.

If you are advising a student group or working with a group that is planning an event, there are some important considerations which should be addressed. It is imperative that you uphold the laws which state that alcohol must not be served to anyone under the age of 21 and that it is illegal to serve individuals of legal drinking age who are intoxicated. As officials of the College, it is our responsibility to prevent such occurrences. A faculty or staff member who is involved in the sponsorship or supervision of an event places both him-/herself and the institution in jeopardy should the law be broken at that event. This could result in serious liability problems.
