Graduate program alumnae and faculty members, Justine Vosloo, Associate Professor & Sebastian Harenberg, Assistant Professor from the Department of Exercise Science and Athletic Training presented research at the 2019 Association for Applied Sport Psychology Conference in Portland, Oregon.
Professors Harenberg and Vosloo, presented their work with colleague Miranda Kaye (Penn State University) and alumna Shelby Anderson ‘18 (PhD student in Sport Psychology at University of North Carolina, Greensboro) – “Perceptions of Leadership Behaviors in Coaches: Validity of the Leadership Scale for Sports Using Exploratory Structural Equation Modeling” Justin Worley ’19, who is currently a first year doctoral student at Michigan State University studying Sport Psychology, presented his research on “Competing for Playing Time: The Relationship Between Positional competition and Social Identity in Collegiate Athletes” with Professors Harenberg & Vosloo

Zachary McCarver ’18 won the Master’s Thesis Award at the 2019 Association for Applied Sport Psychology conference, for his thesis titled: "Exploring Domain-Specific Perfectionism: Do Excelling Student-Athletes Differ in Perfectionism compared to their Teammates?" Zachary completed his thesis under the guidance of ESS faculty members: Sebastian Harenberg, Assistant Professor and chair of the thesis committee; and Justine Vosloo, Associate Professor.
Zachary is the first graduate of the ESS graduate program to win the Thesis Award at the AASP conference. He is currently a second year doctoral student at the University of Northern Colorado, where he is continuing his Sport Psychology studies.

As posted to the CDC website on 9/27/19: CDC, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), state and local health departments, and other clinical and public health partners are investigating a multistate outbreak of lung injury associated with e-cigarette product use, or vaping. The latest findings from the investigation suggest products containing THC play a role in the outbreak. More information is needed to know whether one or more e-cigarette or vaping products, substances, or brand is responsible for the outbreak. CDC continues to work closely with FDA, states, public health partners, and clinicians on this outbreak. Read more . . . The Opioid Overdose Prevention Training Workshop is a skill-building program presented by staff from Southern Tier AIDS Program (STAP). The workshop is designed to help you in recognizing and preventing fatal opioid overdoses. Participants will learn basic information about opioid drugs, harm reduction, signs of overdose, and how to administer naloxone in the case of an medical emergency. Participants who complete the training will receive an identification card that they can use to obtain a free naloxone kit at the STAP location in downtown Ithaca.

Estrelda Alexander, Ph.D., is the Founder and President of William Seymour College in Maryland; she previously taught at Regent University and Wesley Theological Seminary. Al-Anon, the twelve-step group for friends and family members of alcoholics and addicts, is holding weekly meetings at Ithaca College. Meetings are held in the Phillips Room of Muller Chapel every Wednesday from 12:00-12:50pm. The group, officially called the South Hill Higher Ground Al-Anon Family Group, is not affiliated with Ithaca College and is open to students, faculty, staff, and members of the Ithaca community beyond the campus who seek support. The purpose of the meeting is to establish ongoing on-campus support for those who have loved ones contending with addiction. Everything shared by individuals at these meetings will be kept confidential. Free parking is available in the visitor lot near the entrance to campus from 96-B (Danby Road). Opioid overdose has been described as a national epidemic. Recently the U.S. Surgeon General issued an advisory recommending that naloxone be made widely accessible to the public so that non-medical bystanders may effectively intervene to save a life in such cases. While IC has been fortunate in that we have not directly experienced the loss of a student or employee from an opioid overdose, we are taking proactive, preventive measures. Read more . . . The research of biology students Rebecca Falconer (’19) and Chris Gallego Lazo (’19), undergraduate researchers in Dr. Andy Smith’s lab, was highlighted in articles in Science Daily and EurekAlert! The articles summarized their work, which characterizes the structure and mechanics of a remarkable natural glue. This glue is produced as a defensive secretion by one species of terrestrial slug. Their work attempts to understand how the glue gains its remarkable sticking power and toughness. This information can be used to guide the development of novel medical adhesives and could lead to suture alternatives that are flexible and strong.
